The Family Capabilities Approach seeks to strengthen family life and advance the well-being of families and their constituent members through advocacy, information sharing, public and peer education. Raising awareness of issues that positively and negatively affect the quality of family life - in the South African context. The well-being of a family includes amongst others, family relationships, communication skills and household budgeting. Behaviour change within the family is a key component leading to a strengthened, more resilient family.

Localised activities are are mainly undertaken by NGOs, FBOs, CBOs and individuals who volunteer services, they undertake the role of peer educators and assist in identifying those who are in need of follow-on support services that require the help of experts and professionals in the field of social services. The Centre for Family Studies uses its platform to promote organisations that support families.

The CFS also wants to recognise that families have agency. For many families self-help and community support is  critical to being capable families that can support themselves through the life cycle of family.
